My name is John Harris.
I’m from Austin, Texas. It’s a vibrant city known for its live music scene, tech industry, and beautiful outdoor spaces.
PART 1
The examiner asks you about yourself, your home, work or studies, and other familiar topics.
Neighbors
I see my neighbors quite often, usually a few times a week. We tend to run into each other while walking our dogs, taking out the trash, or working in our yards. Austin has a friendly community vibe, and people here generally like to engage with their neighbors, making it easy to have casual conversations and stay connected.
Yes, I do invite my neighbors to my home occasionally. I think it's important to build a sense of community and establish good relationships with the people living nearby. We sometimes have casual get-togethers like barbecues or game nights, which helps create a friendly and supportive neighborhood atmosphere. Plus, it's always nice to share a meal or some time with others and get to know them better.
I like to think I'm a good neighbor. I make an effort to be friendly and considerate, greeting my neighbors and checking in on them from time to time. I also try to be respectful of noise levels and keep my property well-maintained. When someone needs help, whether it's borrowing a tool or keeping an eye on their house while they're away, I'm always willing to lend a hand. Building a positive and supportive community is important to me, and I do my best to contribute to that.
Yes, a neighbor has helped me before. Last year, I had an issue with my car battery, and one of my neighbors was quick to offer assistance. He came over with his jumper cables and helped me get my car started. It was a huge help, especially since I needed to get to an important meeting. This experience reinforced the value of having good relationships with neighbors, as it fosters a sense of community and mutual support.
PART 2
You should say:
- what task you did
why this task was very difficult
how you worked on this task
You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes.
You have one minute to think about what you are going to say.
You can make some notes to help you if you wish.
One very difficult task I succeeded in doing as part of my work was developing a comprehensive software solution for a major client. This task was particularly challenging because it required integrating several complex systems that had to communicate seamlessly with each other. Additionally, the project had a tight deadline, and the client's requirements were highly specific and demanding.
The difficulty of this task lay in its technical complexity and the need for meticulous attention to detail. Each system had its own set of protocols and data formats, which meant that the integration process involved extensive coding, testing, and troubleshooting. Moreover, coordinating with different teams to ensure that every component worked correctly added another layer of complexity.
I worked on this task by breaking it down into manageable stages. First, I conducted thorough research to understand each system's requirements and constraints. Then, I designed an architecture that would allow for smooth integration. I spent countless hours writing and debugging code, running simulations, and conducting tests to ensure everything functioned as intended. Throughout the process, I maintained clear communication with the client and my team, providing regular updates and seeking feedback to ensure we were on the right track.
When I successfully completed the task, I felt an immense sense of accomplishment and relief. The client was extremely satisfied with the solution, which met all their requirements and was delivered on time. This success not only reinforced my confidence in my technical abilities but also highlighted the importance of perseverance, teamwork, and effective communication. It was a challenging journey, but the rewarding feeling of overcoming such a difficult task made it all worthwhile.
Yes, I believe I will tackle similar complex projects again. The experience was challenging but rewarding, and it significantly enhanced my skills and confidence.

Discussion Topics
Difficult jobs
Some of the most difficult jobs people do include those in fields like healthcare, such as surgeons and emergency room doctors, who deal with high-stress situations and life-or-death decisions. Jobs in law enforcement and firefighting are also extremely challenging due to the physical danger and emotional toll involved. Additionally, roles in the military can be highly demanding, requiring both physical endurance and mental resilience. Other difficult jobs include those in construction and manual labor, where the work is physically strenuous and often performed in harsh conditions. Finally, high-stakes financial positions, like investment banking, involve significant stress and long hours, with substantial pressure to perform well.
Some people choose to do difficult jobs for various reasons. For many, there's a strong sense of purpose and fulfillment that comes from making a significant impact on others' lives, such as in healthcare or public service roles. The challenge and complexity of difficult jobs can also be intellectually stimulating and provide a sense of accomplishment and growth. Additionally, these jobs often come with financial rewards, stability, and benefits that can be very appealing. For some, the prestige and respect associated with certain demanding professions, like surgeons or military officers, are motivating factors. Ultimately, personal passion, a desire to help others, and the pursuit of professional excellence drive many to choose these challenging career paths.
I agree that all jobs can be difficult at times. Every job has its unique challenges and pressures, whether it's meeting tight deadlines, handling difficult clients, managing heavy workloads, or navigating complex problems. Even roles that might seem less demanding can have stressful periods, such as dealing with unexpected issues or maintaining consistent performance. The difficulty can vary based on factors like the specific task, the work environment, and individual circumstances. Ultimately, every profession has moments that require extra effort, resilience, and problem-solving, making it clear that no job is entirely free of challenges.
Personal and career success
It's quite important for everyone to have a goal in their personal life. Goals provide direction and motivation, helping individuals focus their efforts and make meaningful progress in various areas, whether it's health, relationships, or personal development. Having clear objectives can enhance one's sense of purpose and fulfillment, making life more structured and rewarding. Goals also help in building self-discipline and resilience, as working towards them often involves overcoming challenges and setbacks. Moreover, achieving personal goals can boost confidence and self-esteem, reinforcing the belief in one's abilities and potential. Overall, setting and striving towards personal goals contributes significantly to a balanced and satisfying life.
While hard work is often a crucial component of achieving career success, it is not the only factor. Strategic thinking, networking, continuous learning, and taking advantage of opportunities also play significant roles. Hard work can help build a strong foundation and develop necessary skills, but being smart about how you apply your efforts and making informed decisions are equally important. Additionally, factors like timing, luck, and being in the right place at the right time can also influence career success. Balancing hard work with other key elements can lead to a more comprehensive and effective approach to achieving career goals.
I don’t think that successful people are always happy people. While success can bring satisfaction, financial stability, and recognition, it doesn’t guarantee happiness. Happiness is influenced by various factors, including personal relationships, mental and physical health, and a sense of purpose beyond professional achievements. Successful individuals may face high levels of stress, pressure, and sometimes loneliness, which can negatively impact their overall well-being. True happiness often comes from a balanced life where professional success is complemented by fulfilling personal experiences and meaningful connections. Therefore, while success can contribute to happiness, it is not the sole determinant.
