Self-correction or teacher-correction?

How to correct your mistakes?

by | Aug 7, 2019 | Speaking, Writing

How often do you go to your English class? Do you have access to your teacher all the time? Can you always expect him/her to correct your English mistakes? Like many other English learners, you may be too dependent on your teacher to correct you, which is not such a good thing. Bear in mind that the first person who can help you is yourself!

SPEAKING – Record your voice

I bet you have a smartphone and there is a voice recorder app on it, so speak into the microphone and listen to your voice later. You will probably identify some of your own English mistakes. If you are not sure what to say, you can use an IELTS speaking topic card (Part 2) to give you ideas.

You may also listen to an English story first (even more than once), re-tell it yourself, record your voice and then compare it with the original story.

WRITING – Write, edit, compare

Most learners keep nagging that there is nobody to correct their writing! But why don’t you edit your own work before looking for help. Of course, there are mistakes that you are not able to recognize, but still there are many many that may catch your own eyes.

Another way to check your own writing is to compare it with a standard model. What you have written does not have to be exactly like the model, but there are many things you can learn from this comparison.
