Candidate’s Response:

The map shows the plan of a public library in the past twenty years and now. Twenty years ago, there were tables and chairs in the middle of the library, which are not there.

The library has changed a lot compared to before. Twenty years ago (2004), after entering, there was a room for reading newspapers and magazines on the left side. There were CDs, videos, and computer games in the room facing it, and there were adult story books in the corridor between these two rooms. Today, to the left is the entrance to the computer room, and the room facing it has been enlarged and includes two sofas, children’s story books, and storytelling events and all reference books are located between these two rooms.

In the past, there was an inquiry desk on the right side of the entrance, and on the opposite there was a room for children’s books. Today, the inquiry desk has turned into a cafe, and the children’s library has been turned into a lecture room .In the past, the aisle on the right was related to non-fiction books for adults, but now there are adult fiction books, an information desk and three self-service machines in this aisle.

Overall, today, the inquiry desk has turned into a cafe, and the information desk and self-service machines have been added to the library.

Feedback:

Thank you for writing this report.
Task Achievement (TA): The task is to summarize and compare the two library floor plans. The response covers most of the key features and changes between the two time periods. However, there are a few inaccuracies and missed details:

The adult fiction books section was previously in the left aisle and is now on the right.
It mentions "adult story books," which is not clearly identified on the map.
The term "adult non-fiction books" should have been used for the past description instead of "adult story books."

Coherence and Cohesion (CC):
The response is generally well-organized, with clear paragraphs for different sections of the library. However, there are a few areas where clarity could be improved:

The sentence "Today, to the left is the entrance to the computer room, and the room facing it has been enlarged and includes two sofas, children's story books, and storytelling events and all reference books are located between these two rooms." is lengthy and somewhat confusing.
There could be a better use of linking words and phrases to enhance the flow of the comparison.

Lexical Resource (LR):
The vocabulary used is appropriate but could be more varied. Phrases like "has turned into" and "in the past" are repeated, which shows limited range. Some terms are used inaccurately or awkwardly:

"Adult story books" should be corrected to "adult fiction books" or "adult non-fiction books" as per the maps.
"Children's library" is not clearly specified on the map, so a more accurate term like "children's books section" would be better.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy (GRA):
The grammar is generally accurate but there are a few errors and awkward constructions:

"There were adult story books in the corridor between these two rooms" is incorrect.
"On the opposite there was a room for children's books" should be "Opposite, there was a room for children's books."
"Today, the inquiry desk has turned into a cafe, and the children's library has been turned into a lecture room" could be more concise and clearer.

Suggestions for Improvement
Ensure all key features and changes are accurately described.
Use a wider range of vocabulary and more precise terms.
Improve sentence structure and clarity, particularly for complex descriptions.
Use linking words and phrases to enhance coherence and flow.

The 6.0 sample upgraded to 7.0+

The maps illustrate the layout of a public library 20 years ago and its current layout. Overall, significant changes have been made to the library's design and functionality.
Twenty years ago, upon entering the library, there was a reading room for newspapers and magazines on the left. Adjacent to this was a room containing CDs, videos, and computer games. The central area featured tables and chairs, with adult fiction books placed along the corridor between the reading room and the media room. Today, the left side of the library houses a computer room, and the previously mentioned media room has been transformed to include sofas, a children's fiction book section, and an area for storytelling events. Additionally, all reference books are now located in this expanded space.
On the right side of the library, the previous layout included an enquiry desk for tickets and book returns immediately after the entrance, with a room for children's books situated opposite it. In the past, adult non-fiction books occupied the right-hand aisle. Currently, the enquiry desk has been replaced by a café, and the children's books section has been converted into a lecture room. The right-hand aisle now contains adult fiction books, an information desk, and three self-service machines.
In summary, the library has undergone significant changes, with the left side now focused on digital resources and children's activities, while the right side offers more services, including a café and self-service machines. The alterations reflect a shift towards a more modern, multifunctional community space.
