Candidate’s Response:

The diagram given depicts World’s five major writing systems: the Logographic, Abjad, Abjuda, Alphabetic, and Syllabic. Overall, it is clearly shown that the most of them are based on sound characters.

Four of these are similar to each other as their characters are represented by sounds. Abjad is the oldest one, which is used in Arabic, for instance, where each character is a consonant. Another one is Abjuda, the system where one letter is a combination of consonant and vowel. English language is an illustration of the third system called Alphabetic. Here, one character is either vowel or consonant sound. A key point in this type of writing is that spelling and pronunciation are sometimes not precisely the same. Finally, in the Syllabic, unlike the aforementioned systems, one figure refers to one syllable and is used in Japanese Kana.

Apart from sound-based systems, the diagram shows a Logographic method of writing with Chinese language referred as an example. In Logographic, character is represented by one word and notably the same system here might be used in two languages, like Chinese and Japanese.

Feedback:

Thank you indeed for writing this report. This is an example of an excellent IELTS writing task 1 response. The visual is fully addressed, developed, and organized in 2 body paragraphs. The report can still improve by showing off a wide range of grammatical structures (conditionals, inversion, relative clauses, etc.) and a wide range of vocabulary related to the topic.

The diversity of human languages and their associated writing systems is a testament to the intricate tapestry of cultures that populate our world. The diagram underlines the primary systems of writing that have emerged globally: logographic, abjad, abugida, alphabetic, and syllabic.
Logographic writing systems, as depicted, employ symbols or characters to represent entire words or concepts. Chinese characters exemplify this, where each symbol can convey an entire idea, transcending linguistic barriers. Meanwhile, abjads, like Arabic, denote consonants, relying on context for vowel interpretation. Abugidas, such as Devanagari used for Sanskrit and Hindi, combine consonants with inherent vowel sounds, allowing for efficient representation of syllables.
The alphabetic system, arguably the most prevalent, employs symbols to denote individual sounds, leading to the formation of words and sentences. English, among numerous other languages, exemplifies this method, enabling a straightforward representation of spoken language. On the other hand, syllabic writing systems, like Japanese Hiragana and Katakana, encapsulate syllabic sounds with individual characters, offering a balanced compromise between logographic and alphabetic systems.
Each writing system reflects the uniqueness of the cultures and languages it serves. They are not merely tools for communication but repositories of cultural heritage, carrying histories, beliefs, and worldviews. These systems of writing have not only fostered communication but have also been instrumental in preserving collective wisdom, recording histories, and propagating knowledge across generations.
In conclusion, the diagram showcasing logographic, abjad, abugida, alphabetic, and syllabic writing systems underscores the richness of human expression. These systems are vehicles that transcend time and space, encapsulating the essence of cultures, traditions, and intellectual evolution. The story of humanity's diverse languages and writing systems is a narrative of connectivity, creativity, and the enduring pursuit of understanding.
