Candidate’s Response:

The chart shows what has happened to five lakes covered in ice in North America. If we take a look at Superior lake, we see that in the year of 1973 to 1992 the ice cover was at 26 percent but in the year of 1992 to 2012 the percentage of ice cover decreased by 10.

Michigan lake was 14 percent covered in ice in the year of 1973 to 1992 but went to 9 percent in the year of 1992 to 2012. Huron lake was 27 percent covered in ice in 1973 to 1992 and decreased to 21 percent in 1992 to 2012. Erie lake in 1973 to 1992 had the most ice covering at 30 percent but in 1992 to 2012 decreased to 28 percent. And lastly, Ontario lake had the least ice covering than others. It was 6 percent covered in ice in 1973 to 1992 and went down to 4 percent in 1992 to 2012.

Overall, we realise that due to global warming, all ice covers have decreased in the year of 1992 to 2012. The Earth’s heat is rising as time passes and causing the ice to melt and the weather to become warmer.

Feedback:

Thank you indeed for writing this report. We are not allowed to add any information outside what is presented in the visual. Any such information, speculation, or prediction will be labelled as factual mistakes.

Task Achievement (TA):
- The response adequately addresses the task, providing specific data on the ice coverage of the five lakes in both periods.
- The conclusion about global warming may not be relevant; we are not allowed to add any information outside what is presented in the visual. Any such information, speculation, or prediction will be labelled as factual mistakes.

Coherence and Cohesion (CC):
- The information is presented in a logical order, moving from lake to lake.
- The use of linking words like "but" and "and lastly" helps with the flow, but additional cohesive devices could enhance the overall cohesion of the text.

Lexical Resource (LR):
- The vocabulary used is appropriate to the task, and there is an attempt to vary language (e.g., "covered in ice", "ice covering", "ice cover decreased").
- However, the response could be improved with more precise vocabulary and variety in phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy (GRA):
- The response contains several grammatical errors and awkward constructions (e.g., "The chart shows what has happened to five lakes covered in ice in North America" could be more concisely written as "The chart depicts the changes in ice coverage for five North American lakes").

Please Note:
- It's important to report the data accurately. The specific figures for the decrease in ice cover for each lake should be accurately reflected as shown in the chart.

Overall, the response demonstrates a basic ability to describe a chart and make a general conclusion. The candidate should focus on accurately reporting data, using a wider range of vocabulary and grammatical structures, and ensuring that any conclusions drawn are supported by the data presented.

The 5.0 sample upgraded to 7.0+

The bar chart illustrates the average percentage of ice cover on five of the North American Great Lakes during two separate twenty-year intervals: from 1973 to 1992 and from 1993 to 2012. Overall, it is evident that all the lakes experienced a decrease in ice coverage over the two periods, with Lake Superior showing the most significant reduction. Lake Erie maintained the highest percentage of ice cover in both intervals despite a notable decrease.
In the first period (1973-1992), Lake Erie had the most substantial ice coverage, averaging around 30%, followed by Lake Huron at approximately 27% and Lake Superior at 26%. Lake Michigan had moderate ice cover, just below 15%, and Lake Ontario had the least ice cover, slightly above 5%.
Comparing these figures with the second period (1993-2012), there was a marked decline in ice cover across all lakes. Lake Superior's ice cover fell to about 12%, while Lake Michigan and Lake Huron both saw a drop to around 5%. Lake Erie's average ice cover dropped to below 28%. Lake Ontario's decrease was roughly 1% between the two periods, indicating the least drastic reduction among the five lakes.
In short, although all five lakes experienced a decline in their ice cover percentage, Lakes Ontario and Erie were the least affected while Lake Superior lost almost half of its ice cover in the periods given.
