English Jokes

Learn English and have fun

by | Aug 7, 2019 | Listening, Speaking

Enjoy learning English; that is what I always tell my students. You shouldn’t really take English lessons like medicine! One way to have fun with English is listening to English jokes and telling them to your friends.

Why Jokes?

For one thing, jokes are generally rather short, so it might be ONE of the easiest ways to practice your listening. Also, they are fun and quite memorable, that is to say the words and structures used in the joke will stay with you for a long time.

Jokes and IELTS

In IELTS listening section 2, you are expected to listen to one person talking (like when you listen to a joke), and in IELTS speaking part 2, you are given a topic card to speak about. You are supposed to give a monologue for a short time of 1-2 minutes (like when you listen to a joke).

Where can I find English jokes?

English jokes are everywhere! In books (e.g. Just joking), magazines (e.g. Reader’s digest) and more abundantly on the Internet. Take every opportunity to listen to English jokes and then tell them in family/friends gatherings.

Model jokes

Joke #1:

A family of mice were surprised by a big cat. Everybody was scared to death! Father Mouse jumped and said, “Bow-wow!” The cat ran away. “What was that, Father?” asked Baby Mouse. “Well, son, that’s why it’s important to learn a second language.”
