It is not always easy to be polite when speaking in a foreign language. You may be caught by surprise in an unexpected situation, and because you don’t know the right expression to use, you may sound rude! Let’s learn some simple phrases that come in handy in English-speaking countries.

1) Here you are!

You can use this when giving someone something. Other variations: Here you go! / There you go!

2) (Please) help yourself!

Say this to ask people to take some of what they want, without asking permission – used especially when offering food to someone:

e.g. Please help yourself to some cake.

3) After you!

Use this expression to say politely that someone else can use or do something before you do – Used especially when going through a door.

e.g. ‘Do you need the photocopier?’ ‘After you.’

4) (Please) Take a seat!

Say this to politely ask someone to sit down, especially someone you do not know well. You can also say “Have a seat!”

e.g. Take a seat. I’ll bring the menu.

5) Sorry to interrupt!

Say this to stop someone from continuing what they are saying or doing by suddenly speaking to them, making a noise etc:

e.g. Sorry to interrupt, but I need to ask you to come downstairs.
