    Candidate’s Response:

    Dear Ms. Thomson,

I am writing this letter to share with you an invaluable opportunity in the following month for our art shop and me to be a certified oil-paint artist by the reputable Arts for Aesthetics Association (AAA). For this noble cause, I would like to devote some of my working time to attending their workshop in August.

As their August workshop starts on the 12th, I would like to ask you to please reschedule my working hours for the duration of the workshop. As their email suggests, please see attached their official email for the upcoming workshop; I need to attend their venue from the 12th to the 25th of August from 9 to 12 pm.

To handle my tasks during the two-week period, I would like to propose two suggestions. First, from Monday to Friday, considering the distance and the time to commute, I will be able to start my shift at 1:30 pm till 19, which deducts four and a half hours from my daily schedule. Alternatively, although it still may not be sufficient, I can work on weekends from 9 am to noon to cover some of the lost hours.

As you are fully aware of the importance and the gravity of AAA’s certificate for our gallery, allow me to say once the workshop is over, our gallery will be automatically qualified to apply for the annual Gallery Glore Award by the municipality. Once again, I’d like to extend my utmost appreciation for all the support so far and your favorable consideration in the weeks to come. I am looking forward to your guidance and response.

    Yours,

    Feedback:

Thank you for writing this letter. Task Achievement (TA):
The letter addresses all the bullet points, providing a clear explanation of why the writer wants to reduce their working hours and how they intend to manage their work during the study period.
The third point, describing how the studies would benefit the employer, is well addressed, though the link between the certification and the gallery's potential award could be slightly more explicit.
The tone is appropriate and polite, maintaining a professional demeanor throughout.

    Coherence and Cohesion (CC):
The letter is well-organized, with a clear progression of ideas.
There is effective use of cohesive devices, such as “first,” “alternatively,” and “as you are fully aware,” which help to logically connect the ideas.
However, some sentences could be more concise to improve overall flow, particularly in the third paragraph where the suggestion of working weekends could be more succinctly expressed.

    Lexical Resource (LR):
The vocabulary is varied and appropriate for a formal letter. Phrases like “invaluable opportunity,” “reschedule my working hours,” and “favorable consideration” are well-chosen and demonstrate a good range of language.
There are minor inconsistencies in word choice and formality. For example, "see attached their official email" could be more formally expressed as "please find the official email attached."

    Grammatical Range and Accuracy (GRA):
The letter demonstrates a good range of grammatical structures, including complex sentences and appropriate use of modal verbs.
There are minor grammatical errors, such as “which deducts four and a half hours” (should be "deducting"), and some overly complex sentence structures that could be simplified for clarity.
Overall, the grammar is strong, but occasional lapses prevent a higher score.

    Dear Ms. Thomson,
I am writing to inform you about an exciting opportunity that has recently arisen, which I believe will greatly benefit both our art gallery and my personal development as an artist. I have been accepted into an exclusive workshop organized by the prestigious Arts for Aesthetics Association (AAA) to become a certified oil-paint artist.
The workshop will take place from the 12th to the 25th of August, running daily from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. In light of this, I would like to request a temporary adjustment to my working hours during this period. Specifically, I propose shifting my work schedule to 1:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on weekdays, resulting in a reduction of four and a half hours per day. Alternatively, to compensate for the reduced hours, I am also willing to work on weekends from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Obtaining the AAA certification would not only enhance my artistic skills but also significantly raise our gallery’s profile. As you are aware, the AAA certification would qualify our gallery to apply for the prestigious Gallery Glore Award, an accolade that would undoubtedly boost our visibility and reputation within the art community.
I deeply appreciate the support you have shown me thus far, and I hope you will consider my request favorably. I am confident that this opportunity will ultimately contribute to the success of our gallery.
Thank you for your understanding and support. I look forward to your guidance and response.
    Sincerely Yours,
