Canada Accepts PTE Core Now

Canada started accepting the PTE Core test

for all immigration pathways on January 30th, 2024.

by | Feb 6, 2024 | News

This means candidates for Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs, and other immigration purposes can now use PTE Core to demonstrate their English language proficiency. You can also choose PTE Core if you are applying for Canadian citizenship.

But what is PTE core?

PTE Core is a computer-based English language test designed to assess your general speaking, writing, reading, and listening skills. It’s an alternative to popular tests like IELTS and here’s a breakdown of its key features:

It’s a roughly 2-hour test that consists of speaking and writing combined, reading and listening. It’s delivered on the computer and has a 10-90 scoring system.

Test Format:

Duration: Approximately 2 hours
Sections: Speaking & Writing (combined), Reading, and Listening
Delivery: Computer-based test with audio recordings and text passages
Scoring: Automated scoring with human oversight, providing an overall score (10-90) and individual scores for each skill (10-90)

PTE has some advantages that can make it an attractive test for some English learners:

Faster results: You can typically receive your scores within 48 hours.
Flexible scheduling: Tests are available very frequently.
No human examiner bias: Scoring is purely objective and based on a sophisticated AI engine.

But of course PTE has its downsides too

First of all, while PTE Core is gaining recognition, it might not be accepted by every university or immigration authority in case you decide to use it for destinations other than Canada.

Second, it is only computer-delivered. Some individuals may prefer a face-to-face interaction with an examiner – something that IELTS can offer them.

Finally, compared to IELTS and other well-established tests, the availability of practice materials and courses might be lower.

Disadvantages:

Not accepted by all institutions

Computer-based format

Limited preparation resources
