Understanding Single-Word Compounds
Lesson Objectives:
- Identify compound words that are written as a single word.
- Understand how to listen for and spell these words correctly in the IELTS Listening section.
Lesson Content:
- What are Single-Word Compounds?
- Single-word compounds are formed when two simple words are combined into one. These words are used together so often that they merge into a single entity, usually representing an object, a place, or an action.
- Examples: footprint, whiteboard, newspaper.
- Common Patterns:
- These words often describe places (bedroom, classroom), things (basketball, toothbrush), or actions(handwriting, photocopy).
- In compound nouns, the first part is usually stressed when spoken. For example, FOOTball or NOTEbook.
- Listening Tip:
- When you hear two words that sound like they are describing something specific or frequently used together, it’s likely a single compound word. Pay attention to the stress on the first part of the word.
- Practice writing these words without breaking them into two parts.
