3 places on the web for speaking practice
The Internet is the virtual place where you can communicate in English. In this week’s lesson, you’ll be introduced to three great websites where you can improve your speaking.
1. Paltalk: a video group chat service that enables users to communicate via video, internet chat and voice. It offers chat rooms and the ability for users to create their own public virtual chat room.
On Paltalk, you can:
- join a room with your favourite topic of discussion and speak to native speakers.
- join an English practice room and talk to learners from all over the world.
- create your own chat room and invite your friends / classmates!

2. Google Helpouts: This new service makes it easier to get help right when you need it, wherever you are. Whether you want help solving a problem (like how to fix a leaky pipe), completing a project (like how to build a website) or mastering a new skill (like how to play the piano), all you need is a PC, smartphone or tablet with a camera and you can connect with someone who can help.
Are you interested in cooking? gardening? physics? chemistry? music? art? yoga? The good news is many of the Helpouts are offered for free and you can learn new things and improve your English at the same time. For example, let’s say you would like to know how to put the dishes in the dishwasher correctly! Then, all you have to do is schedule a Helpout with Sears Blue Service Crew and receive tips about your dishwasher.
3. Google Hangouts: What if you and your friends would like to hang out together in a virtual world? Add up to 10 people to a video chat group and start a group discussion. All you need a Gmail account and the Hangouts plugin for your computer or cellphone.
3+1. Sharedtalk: A website filled with people from all around the world where you can improve your speaking. Simply find a native speaker and start learning and communicating in English.
On Sharedtalk you can:
- practice with native speakers
- get to know a different culture
- ask for vocabulary and grammar explanations
- share your hobbies and interests
